The Days Before

I sit here writing this as a blizzard is blowing outside my window.  Snowdrifts creep up the steps of the front porch.  Snowflakes hit the windows as wind gusts slap them against the panes.  I sit here in my warm house, by a roaring fire, a cup of hot chocolate holding one marshmallow in my hand.  My knitting at my side waiting for me to pick it up.  I hear the wind outside and feel the coziness within where I am safe and warm………

No, this is really not happening.  Only in my dreams.  We are having unseasonably warm temperatures here in the Midwest of the United States.   Fifty and sixty degree days almost like the beginning of Spring.  Today it is raining outside my window.  I am still warm and cozy inside my house with an electric log glowing in the hearth, blowing out warm air.   It doesn’t seem that Christmas is less than two weeks away.  I worked in my shop this morning making a few little gifts.  I won’t stop sewing until the day before probably.  David says I always do this every year.  Think of one more thing to make even though I have finished with all the gifts.

The picture above is of two of my brothers back in the 1950’s checking their stockings on the fireplace our daddy had built and covered with brick looking paper.  I still have some of those stockings we hung back then.  I love everything about this picture.  My brothers in their pajamas, the Christmas tree on the side, the wallpaper, the logs in the fake fireplace, the candles on its mantle.  I remember it all. I see in the picture that someone got a Bobbsey Twins book.  I was too little at this time to have received it, but I did love the Bobbsey Twins when I grew older.  On Christmas morning the stockings would be full of candy, little gifts and always an orange and nuts in the toe.  One year my stocking held a Cinderella watch.  I loved that watch, but wore it out winding it over and over.

My heart and mind turn to Christmases past when we children were all at home.  Christmas was always a very special time for our family.  Mother and Daddy made it a wonderful time for us and always managed to give us a wonderful Christmas every year.  One year I got a bright, blue Schwinn bicycle.  Because we hadn’t had much snow that year, I took it outside onto our road and rode it up and down the road pretending it was a horse, because, you see, I always asked for a horse every Christmas. I would go so far as to go out and look in the barn every Christmas Eve to see, if maybe, there was a horse standing in a stall.  Little did I know that it would not be long before my brother, Fred, helped me buy my horse, Tornado.  I took all the money I had in the bank and he gave me some money and we bought my beloved horse.  I rode Tornado bare back until one Christmas there was a saddle under the tree.  I loved that horse until I fell in love with David and I forgot about all else and after I married, Daddy sold him. Not David,  Tornado!  I still feel sad that I forgot all about him.  But I had several years that  I rode him all over the countryside.  There is nothing like the back of a horse to make you feel happy.  I loved riding.

I can still remember the smells of Christmas.  The tree brought in from the woods.  Mother baking fruitcake, cookies, making candy.  My sense of smell was blasted with so many good smells and my sweet tooth was satisfied immensely during this time.  Mother always made gingerbread men to put in the Christmas stockings she had made for the children in her Sunday school class. I always helped her ice them and decorate them with raisins for eyes and mouth and buttons.   I think I may try my hand at gingerbread men this year.

I get nostalgic this time of year.  Wishing we could all be together one more time, but Mother and Daddy and my oldest brother, Jack, are in heaven celebrating being with Jesus.  I will see them one day and every day will be like Christmas.   So I make the most of Christmas here on earth and pray for peace and that everyone will have someone to love this year.  That’s what Christmas is all about, you know.  The greatest Love came down at Christmas into a manger stall.  Celebrate.  What a  wonderful time.  Bye.

All Is Merry and Bright

The weeks after Thanksgiving seem to go in a blur for me.  I’m making, baking, creating, sewing, quilting, decorating, and doing all the other things I do during the days before Christmas.   Also, when grandchildren and their Christmas programs are added to the mix, it makes for a very busy time.

This week we had two programs to attend.  Our granddaughter sang in her Christmas choral concert.  Really put us in the spirit of the season.

DSCN2556

She is getting prettier every day.  So proud of her.  She is using the talents God gave her.

DSCN2561

DSCN2559

Their school is Christ centered which is really what the season is all about.  It’s nice to attend a school program where Jesus is welcome.  Too many schools don’t even want to use the word Christmas any longer which is really sad.

On the home front, decorations have gone up.

DSCN2540

DSCN2548

The little ceramic tree I was given one year by someone I babysat for.

DSCN2538

We put the tree in the dining room because honestly, it was the only room it would fit.

DSCN2546

I love our Christmas tree.

DSCN2570

I even like its reflection in the window!

DSCN2571

Our neighbor down the street has a huge tree with lights.  I can see it out my kitchen window.

DSCN2547

Lights on the front porch.  David put them up and half of them didn’t work any longer, so he had to take them down and buy new ones.  They just don’t make things like they use to.  Those light sets didn’t last a year.  Hoping these sets last a little longer.

DSCN2531

I am doing a lot of sewing, but since I cannot show you what I am making at the moment, I will show you a purse I made for myself recently.  I love this pattern.  I have made so many purses from it, given some away and kept some for myself.    Can’t wait to show you what I have been sewing for presents.

DSCN2572

DSCN2573

I have been knitting, but not these things.  I made the sweaters and little socks years ago for my baby boys who are now in their forties.  I had forgotten I ever knit socks.  I have been following a blog that teaches how to knit socks and after Christmas I am going to try to knit on circular needles for the very first time and make a pair of socks.  I have been lusting over skeins of sock yarn online.  There are so many luscious colors from which to choose.  People have been posting their sock progress on Facebook which makes me want to start immediately.   I can see a new obsession taking hold.

Last night we attended another Christmas program put on by the fourth graders at my grandson’s school

DSCN2586

It was a Christmas western show.  All the children wore plaid shirts and kerchiefs on their necks.  They looked so cute.  My grandson is the red head boy in the front.  He and the other two boys had major parts in the play.

DSCN2587

Here they are sitting around the campfire.   Why does Spin and Marty come to my mind?  You folks who grew up in the fifties in the states and watched the Mickey Mouse Club know who I am talking about.

DSCN2594

Suddenly, angels appear in the sky. You know, the shepherds in the field keeping watch over their flocks by night.  When suddenly the heavenly host appeared singing “Glory to God in the Highest and on Earth, good will toward men.”

DSCN2597

They went looking for the baby who had been born.

DSCN2601

Carrying his sheep all the way!

DSCN2605

During one song, our grandson played the drum. He was good too.

DSCN2590

I love this boy.  He’s growing up way too fast.

I hope your days before Christmas are busy, happy and blessed.  Bye.

So Thankful

I have so many things to be thankful for.  Too many to count, really.  We Americans have set aside one day to thank God for all we have, but we are losing this day to shopping and Black Fridays that start on Thanksgiving.    I refuse to let this special day go.  It is a time for family, for friends, for giving thanks and thinking about all that we have.  Not one day should go by that most of us cannot think of at least one thing to thank God for.  But if you only can do it one day, make it Thanksgiving Day.

Thanksgiving means I spend a lot of time in the kitchen the day before and the day of.  I’m someone who does not like to cook all that much, but I wouldn’t miss this for anything.  I love feeding my family.  I got to cook two meals this year as some family ate with us on Sunday and others today.     Two Thanksgiving dinners.   I will start eating better after today.   The only time of the year I fix oysters which I love.  I use to be allergic to them, but thankfully, that allergy went away and I can eat them as much as I want now.  In fact, I am thinking of eating them cold right now!

After dinner today we played the game, Say Anything.  It’s really fun and all ages can play.   My grandsons love playing games with their grandma.  In fact, all my grandchildren like to play games.  Years ago, when I was young, my brothers and I played board games all the time, Monopoly being our favorite.  We would have a Monopoly game going for days.  Set up on a card table in our front room, we would stop for chores and to eat and to go to school, but would continue the game, buying houses and motels and wheeling a dealing.  I still like that game.

Last night was the Frost Moon. So appropriate for this time of year, although we are having unseasonably warm weather right now.

DSCN2486

I sat on our porch swing and snapped these pictures.

DSCN2490

DSCN2485

DSCN2492

So incredibly beautiful and awesome to see.  I have seen a lot of moon rises in my life, but I never have stopped being amazed when I see the moon peek over the horizon and lift high into the sky in all its glory.  I hope I never do.

DSCN2495

This is our oldest son.  He brought me that cute bench today.  I love it .  He kept saying if I didn’t like it, he would take it back.  He would have had to break my arm to get it away from me!  Really.    What a nice son.

DSCN2515

Two of my grandsons.  How can you love someone so much?    My cup runneth over.   The one in the glasses is reading for minutes at school  His mother, our daughter, says she cannot get him to stop reading.  I said, “Don’t try!”   I guess they get an award or something for reading the most minutes and he is very competitive.   His brother is a good reader also.  They have been library card holders since they were tiny and always have books to read.  I’m glad.

DSCN2503

This is their parents.  My daughter and son-in-love.  Where they get their good looks.

DSCN2481

I took this picture of Molly and Belle sleeping in the one spot in the sun on our deck.  Snoozing away.

DSCN2482

Snoozing away until……….

DSCN2483

Spotted!  Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and remember, there is One who loves you more than anything. Bye.

Birds of a Feather

My chickens are molting.  I went out into the chicken house this morning and thought there had been a massacre.  Feathers everywhere.  My poor chooks look like someone has plucked them for dinner.   I think they are a little embarrassed.  They also are not laying very well right now as we are only getting one egg a day.   I tell them they need to get busy and start laying again because we are coming into the baking season!

David got a pointy egg the other day.  It barely fit in the egg carton.   I wonder who is the one laying the one lone egg every day.  All the other chickens do all day is eat and poop which is nice work if you can get it, I guess.

We had another tree cut down the other day.  A big elm that had to have been sixty or seventy years old.  It was beginning to drop branches in the driveway every time there was a storm or wind.  We were thinking it might be dangerous as it was so near to the house.  So several men came and cut it down.

DSCN2438

It has stood over our house for many years, but now it was becoming dangerous, dropping branches and we feared a good stiff wind might blow it onto the house so we called the tree men.

DSCN2431

We have had the same people cut down a few of our trees.  Up the bucket went into the tree and the cutting began.

DSCN2437

The men  worked with precision, dropping the big limbs carefully down where they cut some up for us and mulched the rest.

DSCN2443

David did not want to split the big logs, so they loaded them onto their truck.  They rolled them onto that lift and it lifted them up into the truck bed.

DSCN2445

It took three men to roll them onto the lift.

DSCN2444

The man in the sun glasses did all the cutting off of the limbs.  He sure knew what he was doing.

DSCN2446

They still left a lot of wood to be cut and split.  David has been working on this pile for a few days.  We have wood stacked everywhere.   Wood we will burn in our fire pit.  We love to burn fires and sit out in the fresh air and talk.   Wish you could smell the wood.  There is something about the scent of fresh cut wood that reminds me of days in the woods.  Years ago, we had an old red truck and three children at home and we would load them up and go to Camp Atterbury where we had permission to cut up downed timber.  We would spend the day in the woods, David cutting it and me helping him load it into the truck while the children played.  Then we would all sit in the cab of the truck, five of us(there were no seat belt laws then) and took our load of wood home where we would once again have to unload it and stack it.  They say cutting wood warms you three times, when you cut it, when you stack it and when you burn it.  It’s true.

DSCN2451

DSCN2453

Fall is the only time when I feel like making donuts.  I decided to make a bunch of donut holes the other day. David fried them while I rolled them out and cut them.  Then I shook some of them in a bag with sugar and cinnamon and glazed the rest with icing.  Yum, were they good.  We took some to Sunday school to share with our classes.

DSCN2462

We had the most glorious sunset the other night.  I was sitting in our living room and noticed the sky looked yellow.  So I took my camera out back and snapped some pictures.

DSCN2465

DSCN2467

Loved the way the trees were silhouetted against the sky.

DSCN2460

DSCN2457

How majestic is a God who can create such beauty.  I could not stop looking at the sky.  I always feel so close to God when I see something so spectacular in nature.  The sky looked like it was on fire.  These pictures still make me feel awed.

DSCN2479

Had a fire in the fireplace tonight.  Doesn’t it look pretty?  Would you believe this is an electric fire?   No wood involved?   We got this at Lowes tonight and I am thrilled how realistic this looks and it has a heater too.   We don’t burn wood in our fireplace any longer.  We use to have a wood burning stove in it and burnt wood all the time.  One year, when I was baby sitting several children, I felt our chimney(it runs straight up the middle of the house) and it felt really hot.  So I gathered all the children together and called the fire department.  I told him I thought we were having a chimney fire, but it wasn’t an emergency and please don’t use the sirens when coming to our house.  Well, several fire trucks showed up at our house, sirens blaring.   Big firemen in big boots with axes in their hands came into our house.  The next thing I knew they were chopping a hole in a wall and climbing through the ceiling to our attic and going on the roof.  I was so afraid they were going to chop a hole in the roof, but they didn’t. All the while, the little children were watching the firemen bug eyed and I couldn’t help but laugh. They said there had been a fire, but it was out and we had nothing to worry about.  Except for that big hole in our wall!  Thankfully, insurance took care of that.   Therefore, we don’t burn wood anymore in the house.

Now I will leave you with a picture of our cowgirl dog.

DSCN2449

Belle does not look at all happy to be wearing this hat.  We got it in Texas.  I think she looks cute.

DSCN2471

“Me, too, Mom, me too!”  “Yes, Molly, you, too”  Bye.

Mary Poppins!

I first saw the movie, Mary Poppins, years ago at the drive-in theater.  I fell in love with it then, and I still love the movie.  This week I got to see it on stage.  Performed by almost professional people.  High school students.  I was amazed at the professionalism.  Of course, I am not at all prejudiced, seeing as we had a granddaughter performing in the musical.

DSCN2430

They had four performances and we went to the Saturday afternoon show.

DSCN2391

It was a packed, sold out crowd.

DSCN2334

The children were high school students.  Hard to believe that little girl is a freshman in high school.  I thought they had gotten a couple of children to play the Banks children, but no, it was students from the high school.   They were so good in their parts.  That young lady in the hat?  What a voice.  She blew us all away with her singing.

DSCN2261

Here is Mary Poppins with the Banks children and Bert, the chimney sweep.  See those statues behind them?   Three girls stood for long periods of time in one position.   I don’t know how they did it.

DSCN2258

DSCN2336

Let’s go fly a kite…..

DSCN2338

Up to the highest height……

DSCN2343

DSCN2342

Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring…….

DSCN2317

Though her words are simple and few, “Listen, listen”, she’s calling to you.  “Feed the birds, tuppence a bag.  Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag.”

DSCN2329

Now as the ladder of life has been strung, you may think a sweep’s on the bottommost rung.

Though I spends me time in the ashes and smoke,

In this  ‘ole wide world there’s no happier bloke.

DSCN2356

Step in time.  Never need a reason……..So many on the stage and they didn’t run into each other!

DSCN2370

Bert does a flip in midair!  Wow.

DSCN2390

During one song, the audience participated by waving penlights in the air.  It was magical.

DSCN2386

See that young lady in the glasses?  That’s our granddaughter.  She is becoming quite comfortable on the stage.

DSCN2382

DSCN2375

DSCN2299

DSCN2298

The young man sitting here who played George Banks that day was only a stand in and had not gone through the entire play.  The original Mr. Banks was having trouble with his throat.  This guy did an amazing job.  You would not have known he hadn’t been practicing for weeks.  Like I said, professionalism.

DSCN2270

The costumes were so pretty.

DSCN2258

The stage crew did an amazing job of changing the scenery.

DSCN2414

Taking a final bow.  The audience gave them a standing ovation and they deserved it.

DSCN2428

Our son proudly posing with our grandson and granddaughter.   Look, his son is as tall as his dad and he’s only an eighth grader. Our granddaughter’s “little brother.”

DSCN2232

Our younger grandson, who I am sure we will be seeing on stage in the future.  His dad was in several musicals when he was in school and in college.  It comes naturally.

DSCN2426

Such a wonderful day.  I cannot wait to see the next musical this school produces.  Nice to be with family too.

DSCN2423

Oh, I didn’t tell you Bert and my granddaughter are boyfriend and girlfriend.

DSCN2422

They are so cute together.  And the best thing about them is they are great young people with high ideals.  He’s a senior so this is his last musical.

DSCN2332

It was a delightful, fun, exciting, and heart warming musical and I am so glad I got to see it. Bye.

It’s All Over

We have sucked every last second of fun and relaxation out of our recent vacation.  We knew we were going to take two full weeks because we knew we will not be taking another vacation for at least a year.  At least not an extended one.   The two weeks went by so quickly.  We are home now and I kiss the ground we live on as there is absolutely no place like home.  I was so happy to see Molly and Belle and the chickens and that they had all fared quite well during our absence thanks to some great pet sitters who have cared for our pets for years.

We have so many happy memories of our trip to Texas.  Here are a few pictures.  Be prepared.  This is just a few of the pictures I took.

DSCN2100

DSCN2099

What can I say about a place that has my very favorite birds in it?  I love seagulls.  Some people call them flying rats, but I think they are beautiful and look so graceful soaring through the air.  These almost look like angels coming down from heaven.

DSCN2101

DSCN2109

They can stand on one leg.  Not many birds do that.  I don’t know why they do it, but I think they look cute standing that way.

We took a round trip ferry ride from Galveston.  It was just something to do and I am so glad we did.  I have never seen so many sea birds in one place.

DSCN2121

A man was feeding the seagulls in the back of the ferry.   “Mine, mine!” they seem to be saying. What movie is that from?

DSCN2122

They soar up and down and can catch a piece of bread in mid air.

Another bird we saw on our ride was a pelican or I should say lots and lots of pelicans.

DSCN2149

DSCN2148

DSCN2164

Old gentlemen’s club talking about the fish that got away!

DSCN2156

I think this is a cormorant.   I could be wrong.  We also saw lots of dolphins.  They followed the ferry back and forth.

DSCN2162

On the ferry, Miss Garmin told us we were driving in the middle of the water.  She was having a fit.

DSCN2113

David and I were almost the only walk on riders on the ferry.  When we leave Galveston, we will drive our car onto the ferry and cross to the other side.

DSCN2110

David did some metal detecting and found one dime.  We’re rich!!

There was a statue on the walkway by the beach which I found intriguing.  Many years ago, Galveston was hit by a hurricane that just about devastated the whole area.   This statue show a mother, father and child with the father seeming to reach his hand to heaven.  Thankful that Galveston is still here.

DSCN2094

DSCN2096

DSCN2095

I don’t know what the sculptor was thinking when he made this statue, but it was a somber reminder for me of what the sea and wind and rain can do to a community.

DSCN2049

Alas, we land lubbers had to leave the sea and head inland again.  We loved our time in Galveston and in all Texas for that matter, but home is calling, so away we went.

DSCN2158

Onto the ferry.  Here is what I do the entire trip.  Look at an atlas while David makes goo-goo eyes at Miss Garmin. Ha.  I like to see where we are going.

DSCN2169

Past colorful beach houses.

DSCN2167

Away from the beach and all it’s beauty.

DSCN2170

Up…..

up……

DSCN2172

and over the bridge that took us away from the sea.`

DSCN2209

With our little scarecrow sitting on the dash, we traveled down the highway, heading north.

DSCN2206

Over beautiful lakes and rivers.  Too many to remember.

DSCN2188

Past road work.  Lots of road work going on in America.

We like to find local places to eat so we arrived in one town,( I don’t remember which one)(Marshall, Texas) and found this restaurant.  This town was already decorated for Christmas.

DSCN2179

Each lamp post had a lighted wreath upon it.  It was really pretty.

DSCN2184

The restaurant  looked so cute and we wanted something different so we went inside.

DSCN2180

But before we did, I had to take pictures of the colorful planters and tables outside.

DSCN2182

Someone likes color and so do I.  Inside there were comfy looking couches and modern pictures on the wall and shelves of books.   We sat at a table and a young woman came up and offered a free sample of homemade peach ice tea.  David liked it and ordered some with his meal.  I am not a fan of flavored teas.  The chicken salad sandwich that I got was so good.

We talked to the young woman who happened to be the owner, baker and waitress.  She told us she had just given away a thousand books from the several thousand she had found in an old building she had bought seven years ago.  So she thought she would give them away to those who wanted them.  Later, as I was looking at some of her books she told me to take one.  This is the one I picked out.

DSCN2200

I love history and this was a true story about how one group of people tried to restore a cemetery that had been all grown over for decades.  Slaves were buried there besides many ancestors of  the blacks in the area.  It was about racial prejudice and racial harmony which we all should strive for.

DSCN2183

This is the owner. She drew the sign behind her also. A very talented lady.  Her business card reads, General Manager and Baking Goddess.  I could have talked to her longer, but she was busy and we had miles to go before we slept.  But how many places do you go to eat where they give you a book?  If you want to know more about this place go to sweetsabines.com

DSCN2198

Driving into Tennessee.  I have to tell you Tennessee people, you sure do have a beautiful state.  We started seeing deciduous trees again which was nice and there was color.

DSCN2186

DSCN2204

This was the very last antique mall we stopped at and it was the very best one.  We spent two hours there and didn’t see it all.

Well, I could tell you about the books, antiques, fabric and other things I bought along the way.  I made hay while the sun shone since I knew we would not be antiquing for a long time(maybe.)   And I made excuses for all the fabric I bought saying I was going to make Christmas gifts with it and I have already started, so that is true.

Vacations are nice, but truly, there’s no place like home.  Bye.

Galveston, Oh Galveston

It’s been a busy, fun few days.  We left San Antonio just before the big rains from Hurricane Patricia hit.  We drove through rain all day to Galveston.  Sometimes it was heavy and at other times just sprinkles.  The news kept saying the worst was yet to come.

I always wondered who were those nuts who drove or even got outside during a hurricane?  Well, we were some of the nuts out driving in it trying to get to our motel we had booked for three nights.  Said prayers all the way to Galveston.

DSCN2038

A little rain didn’t keep us from stopping at antique stores and a quilt shop.  We found this cute little shop in El Campo, Texas.

DSCN2040

Cedar Chest Quilt Shoppe. It was such a cute store and the ladies that worked there were so nice. We told them we waited until we knew a hurricane was coming before we came to Texas!  This shop had so many fabrics I liked.   I think I have bought enough fabric to keep me busy right through Christmas.   See the quilt blocks on the outside of the shop?

It was raining so hard when we got to Galveston with the waves crashing on the beach.  There were actually people surfing.  Crazy.   Hurricane Patricia is making a swath through southern Texas, Louisiana all the way up to Kentucky.   We found a restaurant for dinner and while we were there, the lights went out.  They didn’t know how to do the bill without the computers.  There were very few in the restaurant, but we felt safe and the lights did finally come back on.

The next morning we found a place called The Sunflower Café.

DSCN2051

If you are ever in Galveston, run, don’t walk to this café.  The best Belgian waffles with berries I have ever tasted.  With whipped topping and syrup, yum.   We actually were looking for another restaurant I had read about in the paper, but it was closed.  Serendipity.  We were meant to eat here.

DSCN2083

DSCN2078

Who wants to ride a ferris wheel in a hurricane?  Me!

DSCN2049

DSCN2084

DSCN2092

We braved the wind and water to be by the beach.  Don’t I look like I’m having fun?!?

DSCN2065

DSCN2069

DSCN2062

Just like houses in Charleston, Savannah and Wilmington, I am in love with these houses. Look, this person is someone after my own heart.  Flamingos on the front porch.  A big oak tree spreads its limbs over the house.

DSCN2058

Lace at the windows.  Colorful houses.  No taupe houses allowed here.

DSCN2063

DSCN2060

I could have spent the whole day just driving by these houses and taking pictures.  I like to think about the people who live in them. I hope they love them and are happy living in them.

DSCN2050

Ghosts would be happy to live in this house.  Such potential.  A real fixer upper.  It could be so beautiful.

DSCN2070

Driving toward the pier, it looked like a giant ship was sitting in the street.

DSCN2071

Several people in our motel were going on this ship.  We talked to a couple who had just gotten off it and they said it was quite a ride through hurricane winds.    Glad it made it safely to port.

DSCN2036

I have to tell you about a restaurant we ate in in San Antonio.  Once again, we got off the beaten path and drove out of the downtown to see what we could find to eat.  We weren’t even sure what we were hungry for.  Suddenly we saw lots and lots of cars parked all around this little restaurant.  Let’s go try it, we said to each other.  So, in we went and there was a fun atmosphere with people carrying large bags of food for take out, families sitting and eating and laughing.  A little older lady came up to us with a pad and pencil and asked what we wanted.  I ordered the fish, shrimp and oyster platter.  Huge orders of fish with bread and French fries.  Paper towels at the tables for napkins.  All very informal and the food was very good.  While sitting there, two policemen came in and seemed to know everyone and one of them started stacking the children’s booster chairs like he worked there. We were the only non-Latinos there and we loved it. This is what I love to do when on vacation.  Eat with the locals, not with the tourists and this was definitely a restaurant popular with the locals.

We went on a ferry ride today.  More about that later.  Adios, Amigos.

Remember the Alamo

We spent a morning at the Alamo.  A shrine to the men who fought here for the state of Texas.  I didn’t know that this part of the country once belonged to Mexico and that Americans were the immigrants back then.  They were allowed to settle there by permission of the Mexican government.

We started out by watching a fifteen minute movie about the  Alamo.  See that lady in the sweater in front of us?  She and I were talking about the Pioneer Woman and she said she had her first cookbook.

They are doing some work on the Alamo as you can see in the background.

This is a huge old oak tree outside the Alamo.

A lot of artifacts inside.  I was snapping pictures until I saw a sign that said No Pictures. Oops.

A cannon like this one shot cannon balls right into the Alamo where David Crockett, Jim Bowie and the others were fighting to their deaths.

Cactus like this grows all around.

I loved being at the Alamo.  So much history.  Funny that American immigrants were fighting the Mexicans for the land back then.  Now it seems to be the other way around except there are no battles involved.

This was our room for the night.  Let me tell you it was a lot nicer than the previous two nights in an Econolodge in Fredricksburg.  While that room was semi-clean and the beds were comfortable, it wasn’t one of the nicer places we have stayed.  On our many travels we have stayed in luxury places and downright creepy places.  Once, in Cincinnati, after seeing the room, I refused to stay in a particular motel.  I think there were hookers outside.  The bed sheets had food on them!  Ugh. Didn’t stay there either.  Another time I let David make reservations in Florida and it was a scary night, but there were absolutely no other motels available, so we locked the door and went to sleep and were out of there in the morning.  We have found that Comfort Inns can be depended on to be clean and comfortable and close to things we want to see.  Sometimes you just don’t know what you have as a place to sleep until you get there.  I have read ratings on some motels that were bad, but the motel was great and other times the ratings are great and the motel is awful.   We stayed in one motel that smelled of bleach, but we had to stay there because it was the only motel within miles of the ferry we were taking the following morning.  At least it was disinfected!

Our time in San Antonio was short, but it was a blessing in disguise because just after we left, the hurricane rains came.  It rained all the way to Galveston and it is still rainy and windy today.

More later.  Bye.

An Alamo, quilt shops and Ducks

It seems like the days are passing so quickly.   We loved Fredricksburg, Texas.  It’s a great shopping experience, but there is much more to it than that.  David and I like to get off the beaten track and see things most of the tourists never go see.

One of those sights was Cross Mountain. Years ago a huge metal cross was erected on top of a mountain outside of Fredricksburg.  You can walk up to it and that is what David and I decided to do.  Now I had been having leg pains, but nothing was stopping me from going up this mountain. The path was relatively easy and was not straight up, but meandered around the mountain.  It was a misty day, but we said we would never get this chance again, so up we went.

Even though it was cloudy and misting, the views were beautiful.

Yes, my hair was wet, but there was only me and David there, so, who cares?

DSCN1949

Even though it looks like my head has been impaled, it isn’t too bad of a picture.

We like to drive around towns we are in and find things that are different from the general touristy things.  We drove out to Lady Byrd Johnson’s  Park south of town.  For those of you who may not know, Lady Byrd Johnson was the wife of one of our presidents, Lyndon Johnson.  Lady Byrd started the wild flower project where wild flowers were planted along Texas highways.  Anyway, it is a nice park.  We saw a river and stopped by it and before we knew it, we had company.

Oh, did I have any food for them?  I keep crackers that I get at restaurants in the glove compartment of our car.  I tell David it’s so if we are ever in the middle of nowhere and are starving, we’ll have crackers.  Well, these quackers wanted crackers!  I dug out several packages and fed them.  Reminded me of when I raised ducks when I was a girl and how they would follow me everywhere because I was the first thing they saw when they hatched.

DSCN1958

They were so cute. I want to raise ducks now.  I could, you know.  Look how snowy white they are and so mannerly waiting for some crackers.

DSCN1959

Then I ran out of crackers and they started getting demanding.   They followed me to the car and I had to jump in and we sped off before they got inside!

Next we went to the Lady Byrd Johnson pollinator garden.  It was so pretty.  I want my gardens to look like this.

Perovskia.  I do raise this and plan to plant a lot more next Spring. One of my favorite flowers.  I spread this in the chicken house to make it smell good.

My sweetie in the garden.

And we found a rare specimen in this garden.  One we have never seen before.

DSCN1985

The Red Capped Americus Siticus Snoreius.  Uncommonly found in gardens of the pollinating kind.  He never moved the entire time we were in the garden.  We tried not to disturb as we didn’t know what he would do.

If you are ever in Fredricksburg, Texas, take a little trip to this park.  It’s a nice little place away from all the tourists.

We drove around town some more and I saw the library.  I love libraries though I must admit I have not been in one for years since I found Amazon.com and can order Kindle books so easily.  This library made me wish I was a little girl being taken on her first library visit.  I could imagine curling up with a good book here and spending the day.

Chandeliers in the windows.  It was wonderful.  I wanted to go in and spend a few hours, but it was closed for the day.  So we went to eat at a German restaurant we had seen downtown.  We were walking along just fine and all of a sudden, I felt something snap behind my knee and I had to immediately sit down.  I could barely walk.  We managed to get to the restaurant and had a delicious meal.  I had three kinds of sausages, a salad and German potato salad .  It was all so good, but way too much to be able to eat it all.  Really enjoyed that meal, but then I had to try to walk out of the restaurant.  David went to get the car and he drove up right in front of a big puddle and I had to leap across it to get to the car which really hurt, but I made it.  I hobbled around the rest of the day holding on to things as I walked.  It’s strange, because this was my left leg and the same thing happened to my right leg about a year ago and it took a few days to get better.   I knew I probably shouldn’t have climbed that mountain, but, hey, I like a challenge.

This morning I was still hobbling, worried that I wouldn’t be able to walk around the Alamo, but I did.  I will write about that in my next post.

Here’s to ducks, German food and out of the way parks.  Bye.
