What do all these have in common?\u00a0 Not much, except for the pup and pain bit.\u00a0 Let’s just say Molly Marshmallow and I have had a few altercations in the past few days.\u00a0 We are trying to teach her not to jump up on us and bite our heels as we walk and it has been a very slow process.\u00a0 Add to that that Molly simply loves to dash at the fence where the chickens are encaged and we\u00a0are ripe\u00a0for some excitement.\u00a0 Add to that that she slipped right by me when I opened the gate to where the chickens were\u00a0 and began chasing the chickens and all heck broke loose.\u00a0 I’m just saying.\u00a0 David was splitting wood up in the front yard and he said I yelled so loudly he thought I was right next to him!\u00a0\u00a0 I mean the neighbors a quarter of a mile down the road probably heard me.\u00a0 Molly was dashing from chicken to chicken and she got either Penninah or Jemima down.\u00a0 I\u00a0could just\u00a0see chicken feathers, chicken heads and blood everywhere\u00a0and that’s when I went into action.\u00a0 I happened to have a plastic bucket in my hand I was using to carry water to the chickens and I winged it at Molly with all my might.\u00a0 It knocked her for a loop and she went behind the compost pile to hide and that’s where David found us.\u00a0 Me holding Molly at bay and as I looked back, I saw the chickens nonchalantly sauntering into their other pen.\u00a0 I ran and shut the gate and that’s when Molly ran out.\u00a0 That’s also when I realize I had hurt myself somehow.\u00a0 I had pulled muscles in my right leg I didn’t know I had.\u00a0 I suddenly could barely walk or stand on my leg.\u00a0\u00a0 I don’t remember falling ,stumbling or otherwise during the excitement, but I did something. \u00a0David had to help me into the house.\u00a0 I was just getting over a pinched nerve I had at the back of my knee since Thanksgiving and now I am crippled again.\u00a0 The thing is, it feels better to walk than to sit down or lay down so maybe that is good.\u00a0 I will have to keep active.<\/p>\n

Anyway, Molly seems to be a little more subdued these last couple of days.\u00a0 She actually sat beside me and allowed me to love on her and pet her all over without trying to bite.\u00a0 She really is a sweet dog and doesn’t mean any harm, but she needs to learn that her teeth are not for biting or eating chickens.\u00a0\u00a0 And the chickens?\u00a0 Those dorks don’t have a care in the world and have forgotten all about it.\u00a0\u00a0 Me, however.\u00a0 Pain city.\u00a0 This too shall pass.<\/p>\n

” I didn’t mean to hurt you, Mom.”<\/p>\n

Look at that sweet puppy.\u00a0\u00a0 Wouldn’t hurt a flea.\u00a0\u00a0 Ahem.\u00a0\u00a0 All the dogs have learned to sit and wait for their dinner.\u00a0 No, they are not looking at David with adulation.\u00a0 They are looking at their food dishes and wishing he would hurry up and put them down.\u00a0 See how big Molly is getting?\u00a0\u00a0 She is the one in the middle.\u00a0 I can hardly tell her from Belle from the back anymore.<\/p>\n

The hens have been laying a little lazily lately.\u00a0 Alliteration.\u00a0 But, still, we have plenty of eggs. I\u00a0made egg salad the other day.\u00a0 I don’t know why, but I use to think making egg salad would be hard.\u00a0 Here’s how easy it is.<\/p>\n

First I boiled the eggs.\u00a0 Boiling eggs is easy.\u00a0 Let them come to a boil and then let them sit in the hot water for about twenty minutes or so.\u00a0 If you ever boil eggs and the\u00a0yolks\u00a0are green, it’s because you have boiled them too long. \u00a0Put the\u00a0eggs\u00a0in cold water and peel them.\u00a0 Fresh eggs do not peel easily.\u00a0 If you want pretty deviled eggs, use older eggs.\u00a0 My eggs are always fresh. Since it didn’t matter how pretty the eggs were in\u00a0this dish,\u00a0I didn’t mind that they looked this way.<\/p>\n

I take a potato masher and begin mashing.<\/p>\n

\"DSCN0118\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Until the eggs are mashed finely.\u00a0\u00a0 I add salt and pepper.\u00a0 Not much.<\/p>\n

\"DSCN0120\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Then mix in mayonnaise(I use Miracle Whip).\u00a0 Stir thoroughly.\u00a0 I don’t like a lot of mayo in my egg salad.\u00a0 I want to taste the eggs.\u00a0 There’s a fine line between too dry egg salad and too wet egg salad, but that is up to you and what you like.<\/p>\n

And there you have egg salad.\u00a0 It doesn’t last very long around here and I can go out and get fresh eggs any time and make it any time I want to.\u00a0 That’s the blessing of having your own chickens.\u00a0 I always tell people if you have chickens, you will never starve because you will always have eggs and if you raise chicks, you will always have chickens.\u00a0 I fixed chicken and noodles yesterday from chickens I did not know personally.\u00a0 My chooks will die of old age.(Or murder from a pup.)<\/p>\n

Seed catalogs are coming in almost daily now.\u00a0 I’m pretty sure what I am going to plant this year.\u00a0 Pumpkins, tomatoes and flowers.\u00a0\u00a0 I really don’t feel like having a big vegetable garden this year.<\/p>\n

I get a lot of my seeds from Wildflower Farm.\u00a0 It’s based in Texas and sells seed by the pound.\u00a0\u00a0A pound of zinnia seeds goes a long way.\u00a0 I had zinnias planted everywhere last Summer.\u00a0 I also had lots of sunflowers which the goldfinches loved.\u00a0 I will probably plant some of those again.<\/p>\n

I have been working on a new quilt top.\u00a0 I love the pattern in this one.\u00a0 I need to make forty-two squares.\u00a0 Here are just a few of them I have already made.<\/p>\n
