{"id":1161,"date":"2013-07-01T14:14:50","date_gmt":"2013-07-01T14:14:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/snicklefritz.net\/blog\/?p=1161"},"modified":"2013-07-01T14:48:16","modified_gmt":"2013-07-01T14:48:16","slug":"hollyhocks-around-the-barn-door","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/snicklefritz.net\/blog\/?p=1161","title":{"rendered":"Hollyhocks Around the Barn Door"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Growing up on our Indiana farm one had to find their own entertainment.\u00a0 We didn&#8217;t have DVDs, cell phones, Ipods, and very few channels on the television.\u00a0 I was good at finding things to do around the farm.\u00a0 I was never bored.<\/p>\n<p>Growing outside my parents&#8217; bedroom window were a group of hollyhocks.\u00a0 I loved these flowers for one thing only, I could make little ladies with them.<a href=\"https:\/\/snicklefritz.net\/blog\/?attachment_id=1160\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1160\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1160\" alt=\"DSCN6224\" src=\"https:\/\/snicklefritz.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DSCN62241-500x375.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/snicklefritz.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DSCN62241-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/snicklefritz.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DSCN62241-150x112.jpg 150w, https:\/\/snicklefritz.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DSCN62241-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/snicklefritz.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/DSCN62241-624x468.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is how I made them.\u00a0 When I was a girl, I took little sticks and fastened the flower bloom to the flower bud and then I would have a lovely little lady. Now we have hollyhocks in our garden.\u00a0 A few years back there were two houses down the road and across the railroad tracks where people lived.\u00a0 I use to ride my bicycle down the lane by their houses and see the gardens that were growing there.\u00a0 Then the people all moved out and the fire department came and burned down the houses for practice.\u00a0 A gravel pit was going in where the houses had stood.\u00a0 David and I walked back there after the houses were gone and saw all the flowers that were left, so we took shovels and pails and dug up several hollyhocks and brought them home.\u00a0 Since then, they have flourished and reseeded themselves so that I have several pretty old fashion hollyhocks growing in my garden.<\/p>\n<p><a (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I love flowers that reseed themselves and are so easy to grow.\u00a0 Hollyhocks never disappoint although they do get bugs on their leaves that will eat them until they look like lace, but we spray them now so they stay pretty.<\/p>\n<p>A few years back I found a quilt pattern called Hollyhocks Around the Barn.\u00a0 Wish I could tell you who the designer was or the quilt magazine where I found the pattern, but I can&#8217;t.\u00a0 Anyway, I made the quilt and loved how it turned out.\u00a0 Since we had a red barn on the farm, I made the barn in the middle of the quilt a burgundy reddish color.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/snicklefritz.net\/blog\/?attachment_id=1146\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1146\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The real hollyhocks fade right into the background of the quilt.\u00a0 It&#8217;s amazing how similar the colors are.<\/p>\n<p><a
